In short... they are fantastic! :salude
I got David's Pure Handwound Brownbucker (A2/9.2k) for the bridge and Pure Handwound Pagey 2 (A2/7.5k) for the neck. Got them in double cream and put them in my Honey Burst 2016 Les Paul Traditional T.
First off, I was a bit surprised at just how PAF-like the Brownbucker really is. Despite his website's description of it ("For the VH sound if you’ve got a Marshall modded that way. Otherwise a great all around overwound PAF sound...") I guess I just wasn't quite expecting it to be quite so PAF sounding. Maybe I was expecting it to be more modern sounding for some reason??? (perhaps because it's overwound and modeled after EVH, I don't know). But I was pleasantly surprised by just how much it sounds like a good old PAF pickup. When I read his website's description of the Brownbucker model I thought to myself... well, I love EVH's "brown" tone and if it blends that with a bit of PAF character, that'll work. I don't have any "EVH mods" done to my Marshall (and don't plan to), so really the Brownbucker just comes across as a great PAF-type pickup. Clarity, 3D, airy, woody, expansive, articulate, yet punchy and meaty enough to show off some real grunt... all of these terms describe it... even under pretty high gain on the red channel of my Marshall DSL40C
And the Pagey 2... is that ever a nice sidekick to the Brownbucker! Definitely named well as I can hear Jimmy in there for sure... and the middle position (w/ the Brownbucker) is the best middle position tone I've yet encountered. It's got a certain effervescent "bloom" to it I can't quite describe other than to say I love it. I'm generally not much of a middle position player... I can see that changing now! :hmm
Anyway, both pickups are VERY nice. :applaude And the double cream color bobbins match my Les Paul Trad's upgraded plastics (Historic rings and a more vintage colored pickguard from a 2014 Peace LP) perfectly... better than the DiMarzios I had in there prior.
Anyway, I know I'm not the first (nor will I be the last) to sing David's praises... but just wanted to anyway. His pickups are worth the wait.
