What is case candy?

Is it all the little bits of paper and cardboard? I have 5 reissues and they all came with tags and olde worlde bits of paper. I guess it was to recreate the stuff you'd have got in the case at the time.

I don't have much interest in these things so I throw them away. I keep the COA of course. But I don't want to keep a drawer of 5 packs of useless card. Perhaps someone would like it if I decide to sell one of the guitars, but so be it. I'm in a non-clutter phase of life. Does this matter to you?

If a burst came with stick of hard/stale bubble gum in the case I wonder what it would sell for today...

It falls into the category of "stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with playing guitar and making music," and is considered by many to be valuable and desirable.

Hmm.... Never got a Custom~Art~Historic blanky! Were they earlier than 2003?

When I get a guitar, I peruse the candy, but I don't do an exhaustive rundown verification about what I've received. I am much more concerned about the condition of the guitar itself.

And I don't really compare one set of candy to the next, with changes in what's included year-by-year.

I do keep everything, plus receipts, but I must admit, I am terribly disorganized so my candy is how it comes, some in the case, some in drawers near the guitar, etc. It's strewn around.

It would be nice if they sized everything to fit in the case pocket, without bending, and filled that volume without extra contortion, fuss and muss, similar to what Fender does with its portfolio pouch. Even the tools are better organized. Of course, I care more about the instrument.

Not so worried about selling as complete... so-o-o, not so worried. 🍑

Wow that's a lot of goodies there! You don't get much in the VOS case. I keep the extra switch tip and blank switch plate for the back in a baggie. Put the COA in the drawer with the things I remove from or replace on the guitar: scratchplate off, replace tuners for locking ones, replace switch tip with gold knurled, replace jackplate with metal one, replace strap buttons for strap locks.

Other than that, I chuck it. I like to keep the case pocket empty. Just one of my funny little ways.

Coincidentally, just this week I was asking on EverythingSG if I should shell out $40 for the case candy that normally comes with the Gibson SG Standard. I got the guitar cheap because there was no case (and hence no case candy). I was thinking of investing in a soft case that normally comes with the SG Standard to increase the value if I wanted to resell it. Most agreed that I’d get more than my money back if I got the case, but not to waste my money on the candy. I couldn’t resist. It just felt more complete to have it all together.

You’ll see it selling on eBay, so ya people will buy it, and it has some value.

You know, besides case candy, I've had some prospective buyers a few of my guitars who changed their mind because I didn't have the original shipping box that the guitar came in!

Do you know how many boxes would be stored in my home if I kept all the boxes?

I kept my last three Gibson shipping boxes.. stored flat behind the guitar rack.. and I’m glad I did.. as I’m now planning a house move and I’m gonna use them to pack all my old gig tees and tighty white’ies..

That is wild. Case/candy I get it, but boxes? Wow.

I tried to preserve original boxes for awhile until it became a flat out fire hazard and had a purge 🤣
