Does anybody know the whereabouts of Burst 9 0901?

I was down at Ed Clark's shop today, a builder who does all my set ups and repairs.

He told me a great story about a '59 burst he sold about twenty yrs ago. He was the second owner and bought it in '70. It's pictured in one of the burst books (I forgot which one). The LP was leaning on a Marshal amp (very unique). That picture was taken the day before he sold it. He has a copy of it hanging in his shop. He never forgot the serial number. Ed was reminiscing, and was wondering where it could be all these yrs later. He sold it to some fellow in Westchester County (Pelham?). I told him I would ask here at the forum. Somebody may have seen it go by. :59gibson

YES YES!! That was the fellow's name he told me. HOLY MOLY!:dude: OH my God its beautiful! The pic he has is a black and white copy.

Man, I'm getting chills, and it's not even mine. Tom, thanks a million. Ed is a very decent fellow and would probably enjoy speaking to anyone interested in any of the details about the guitar he once owned. I still can't get over how stunning that guitar is. :salude

9 0901 update:
Spoke to Ed today. He said when he sold the guitar it was all original. He was the first to take off the covers. The neck pick up was double white and the bridge pickup was double black. He also said that the "bees' were dried out (whatever that means) and the guitar had a terrible hum through a Marshall, (ironic) but sounded fine through a Fender.

Probably the "bumblebee" capacitors dried out, so they pass hum or static.

Don't know much about this fellow. Ed did say, at one time, he owned a good number of these bursts.

I checked out Kosta's Burst at the Prune Music show in Mill Valley, CA (must have been circa 1971-72?) He was asking $3500 for it which, at the time was about $1000-1500 more than a typical Burst. I recall thinking it was the finest example I'd ever seen (up until then and ever since!) in terms of the quality of the wood and the finish color (and condition). At that time I owned a tiger-striped '59, not as nice as Kosta's but pretty darn nice (its pictured in Robb's book). When I reached out to pickup Kosta's guitar at the show he said "Don't touch it, don't even look at it!

That is a strong looking piece. I'd have to hear it to be convinced to throw down on a personal "keeper" basis... nonetheless, "she" isn't short on looks. It certaily has the glamour which beckons.

It's a bit out of the norm, for me, to see one that appears so pristine, yet, sans pickup covers. For me, as out of the loop as I am at this point, I'd like to know as much as possible about the guitar as possible regarding it being as built from the factory.

I do defer to the experts at this point in time. By that, I suggest ,such a piece was revered by players all the way back to when the mystique began. Back to when 'bursts were in the $1,800 range. < there was such a time... and it would have been unusual to pass through Nashville and not have seen at least one in Gruhn's front window display>. The creme bobbin thing was alive and well in the '70's. It was a bonus then as it is considered now... only the price tag has changed. If it's totally legit, that has been "the one" to find as far as having it all appearance wise. Tonewise is a whole other deal, most often.
