I don't think there's a whole bunch of original 2x12" 18 watt Marshall's floating around out there... maybe Ganzler? I know Solidbody has one and it's supposed to sound unreal... but this little 18 watt unit ROCKS!:dude

That one looks schweet!:wow
What does that one sound like compared to 1x12? If yours sounds anything like PT's 18W, then you've got a great one!:dude
Sorry... don't know what the originals sound like... just not that many around to try...:dead:

It's like the 1x12" but only MORE! I haven't had the pleasure of hearing Plaintops' amp, if it's like this one then it just keeps giving it up more and more as you turn it up.

Very percussive attack to the sound until you get it up to "dimed" territory then it compresses nicely. Can't make it get slushy on the bottom end... and I love that. Cleans up so nice when you roll the volume back on the guitar... the amp goes from beautiful chime to killer grind at a twist of the knob.

Thanks to Dan "srvrip2" for the killer Mullard EL84's... the stock JJ's were great, the Mullard's are unreal!

Alnicos! :)spin

I put a prerola G12H30 in mine (sorry Keith, I knew you wouldn't mind). It's pretty incredible. The Blockhead amps are simply the best Marshall clones available.

Not only are they great amps, you can talk to the guys that made 'em and get their input as well.

Last time I tried, I couldn't get ahold of Jim Marshall to save my life!:eek

Hey rooadrunner, Is that the Series 1 style cab? It seems like the wood is thinner. Does that one have trem?

I'm not sure which series it is PT... it looks like a slightly smaller version of a series 2 Bluesbreaker. If you look at page 102 in the Doyle "Marshall" book you see a bunch of 18's and BB's... it's a copy of the amp in the middle on top of the Clapton style Bluesbreaker.

Yes, it does have trem., so the circuit is different from yours I imagine. Doesn't yours have a boost or a master?

No, mine has trem on channel 2. It dosen't have a master. The Inesity pot acts as a complexity when the trem is off. I think it does have a little more gain than the typical 18 watt. You can roll it off to a desired taste. I tend to keep it on full tilt. :)spin

If you get a chance pick up a pair of Siemens el84. Night and day from the Mullards. My Mullards sit in their boxes. ;)

Ok, I just pulled out the Mullards. You're right, in regard to clarity, bark and 3-D tone. They do sound great! I still like Siemens. They sing and have more gain on tap. The Mullard might be "too good" for me anyway. I'll leave them in there for now.

Also,

I have a pair of D getter "Made in Holland" labeled Hammond. Are they suppose to be good? I also have untested Phillips "Mullard" tubes. Thought on those?

PT,

That 2-12 does look thinner from the back. From the front it looks fine as a series II 18W cab. But in the rear view, it is very obvious that they forgot to add some extra thickness to the top where the chassis attaches to the cabinet. The top of the chassis is supposed to be below the top of the back panel. Look here for a photo that shows how the Series II cabs were built in this region...

Here's a little higher resolution...

Just for grins, here are a pair of 18Ws that I built in matching red with black valance panels. One is 2-10 and the other is 2-12 with Celestion Blues. It sounded amazing.
