Tail Piece Question

Hi,
When I remove the strings on my '01 Standard the studs for the tail piece are loose. When I remove them on my '68 LP Custom RI they are solid like they aren't ment to be adjusted. The tail piece on the Custom is almost down to the body, is this normal? Is it because one is a Nashvill bridge and the other an ABR-1?

The tail piece studs on the Standard also have the rings flush with the top and are painted over. The ABR-1 tailpiece looks like its just one peice screwed to the top.

Sorry for all the questions. Thank's,

The tailpiece can be adjusted up or down, it's all "normal". Screwing it all the way down supposedly increases the sustain, it will certainly increase the string tension. Raising it lowers the tension. The studs are in the anchors solidly, its no problem if they "rattle" around a tiny bit with no pressure on them (strings off). ADVICE: be very careful screwing them up or down. It's very easy to have the screwdriver slip off and then you have a nasty scar on the guitar. Stewart McDonald makes a special stud screw driver tool that fits around the stud so it doesn't slip off (about $25).

To get the strings just clear of the back of the bridge the tailpiece was set about 3/16" clear of the body. I measured the gap and made some spacers out of 1/2" aluminium with 5/16" hole an put these under the studs. They could then be tightened without changing the height. Improved the sustain too.

Cheer!
