Collectors are funny people.
There are folks who have (or have had) famous stolen artworks that they can't tell anybody about.
The idea of being secretly alone with a Picasso or the Beano burst is so weird.

What's so weird about it? Not everyone needs to produce a YT video or go on TikTok for everything that interests them.

I for one will say it takes a weird, twisted & criminal mind to steal, or have others steal artwork / instruments for you. Just because you want it so bad that your moral goes out the toilet and you actually do it. Scumsters IMNSHO ;)

If I have to tell you what's wrong with getting kicks from being alone in a room with someone else's super valuable stolen thing, you wouldnt get it.

"Buying stolen gear" and "how you get enjoyment of things" are different things. Some people can like things in private. And that a different decision tree from how they obtained it, which the owner of Beano and I disagree on.

BTW - There are people who know where the guitar is. So it's not like the owner hasn't discussed it with people.

Despite his cult status in 1966 if not for a dozen things after EC would have been simply another name on an LP- Beano would have been just another stolen guitar (in S EU right?). Nobody would have been touting it as Beano? Beano probably meant nothing? Nobody stole Beano- it was a stolen LP. Somebody realized in the last 25 years that they had EC’s guitar from the Mayall album.
It’s not really like a stolen Picasso. And if it changed hands a couple times. Hm- some of my stuff could have been ill gotten. I wouldn’t know.
Holding forth on prednisone. Sorry.

If DZ has the guitar like you are all hinting at I dont think it will ever see the light of day. Dirk has had 30 years almost collecting this stuff and has never once shown much interest in putting his name or collection out there for public consumption. and the time he did poke his head up it cost him The Redeye, which yes was a stolen guitar but i dont think DZ went out of his way to buy HOT stuff.

I would love to see Beano and id love to know exactly what it is.... a 60 a 59 whats the output. but If its truly with Ziff forget it until him or clapton dies

I'm not saying Ziff does have it, though it's alleged to be in a collection on the east coast and obviously he's based in New |York and most secretive about his collection. Though |I would think that if |I was him and had already been burned on a previously stolen instrument, even though I'm presuming he didn't know that aspect when buying Red Eye, (hoping he wouldn't buy a known stolen instrument) |I would have been even more circumspect about checking out the provenance of every one in the collection.

That said, Beano was stolen in the mid to late \60s, when did Ziff start collecting?
|I'd presume it had gone through a few sets of hands before landing in his. (assuming it is him who has it.)

always funny the second Dirk Ziffs name is brought up and spelled out the thread goes ICE cold
I somehow missed the thread before, but I always enjoy a Beano thread!

It's just that these last couple of years, it seems that everytime someones inquires or speculates on Beano, there are always a lot of "Clapton doesn't even want it back!!", "it's just a guitar!" comments. It really takes the fun out of commenting on forums.

(As to why threads turn cold)

I mean, we like Les Pauls, we like Beano, of course we want to see it again! :)

I'd imagine it's gone through a few hands since it was stolen. Wasn't Mr Margouleff sourcing guitars for him?

I doubt Eric Clapton would care. He seems to be content playing new Stratocasters for the most part and sold much of his iconic gear a few years ago. I worked for him maybe two years ago, and he had three or four Strats, a couple of Martin models, and maybe a 335 or LP, along with a couple of tweed amps and (IIRC) a Leslie.

He sounded fantastic. I could be wrong, but I believe I heard somewhere that his amps had been modded by Dumble. I could be mistaken, but that's what I heard. I doubt it mattered very much.
