Tone Controls Malfunction ?

Newbie to electric guitar. I just bought an Epiphone Les Paul 100 and a Peavey Spydyr amp. When turned, both tone controls only go from bright to low, nothing in the mid-range. They act more like switches and the switch so to speak occurs after turning the control knobs just a little. Having no experience with electric I'm wondering if it is the guitar controls or the amp or if there is even a problem. Any ideas appreciated.

Try spraying the pot with a good contact cleaner like De Oxit 5. Turn them a few times. Could be corrosion build up on the pots.
Was it brand new?
I shoild add, open back control cavity on guitar and try and spray inside the pots.

Will do, thanks. Matter of fact, the treble/rhythm switch wasn't working in the middle position and now it is suggesting a clean up would help. Not new, it was made in 2004.
